Will this get him off crate rest any sooner?

No. And be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise. Activity restriction after a TPLO exists because a bone was cut and held with a metal plate, and that bone heals on its own schedule. Your surgeon clears it from radiographs and a physical exam — typically somewhere between six and twelve weeks, depending on the dog.
